Manuel Ceja, MD
Primary Care Physician

Dr. Manuel Ceja is currently the Medical Director at JFK Advanced Medical PC. He is a graduate of the Autonomous University of Guadalajara in Mexico and after medical school, he performed a year of training in General Surgery and subsequently 3 years in Internal Medicine at the Catholic Medical Center of Brooklyn and Queens in New York. He also finished 2 years of Pulmonary Medicine after which he went into a private Internal Medicine practice in Howard Beach, New York. During this time he also worked at the Catholic Medical Center of Brooklyn & Queens as a teaching attending in the Departments of Pulmonary Medicine and Infectious Diseases and was the Director of Quality Assurance for the Department of Respiratory Care Services.

Dr. Ceja has worked with the JFK Airport Community since 1996 when he offered a position at Kennedy Medical Offices by Dr. Anthony Parrinello, who was then the President and CMO. At the Kennedy Medical Offices, he eventually became the Medical Director and worked extensively with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Besides Internal Medicine, his specialties also include General Occupational Medicine and Aviation Medicine. During his tenure at Kennedy Medical Offices, he evaluated and treated numerous occupational injuries and illnesses and well as assisting ill and injured travelers. He has been an FAA Senior Aviation Medical Examiner since 1997 and has performed aviation medical exams for the Japanese Ministry of Transportation and the Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA). He is a Certified Medical Review Officer and performs assessments and evaluations of the Department of Transportation Urine Drug Test results for numerous companies as well as lecturing to employees and supervisors on drug and alcohol awareness. Dr. Ceja is also a Urine Drug Collector and Breath Alcohol Technician instructor.

Dr. Ceja is knowledgeable in Travel Medicine and Immunizations and he regularly provides pre and post-travel consultation to persons seeking to obtain vaccinations for travel as well as immigration status physicals.

Outside the airport, he has been active in Homeland Security and was a member of the United States Air Force Auxiliary-Civil Air Patrol as a Major and he was the New York City Group Deputy Commander & Medical Officer and Safety Officer and was a Critical Incident Stress Management team member in the New York Wing of the USAF-CAP. He is also a member of the FBI’s Infraguard program which monitors potential threats to Homeland Security and is a graduate of the FBI’s Citizens Academy.

Dr. Ceja has also been active with Aviation Safety in general and is a designated FAA Aviation Safety Counselor.

Michael Gerling, MD

Dr. Gerling specializes in surgical treatments of spinal disorders. A Canadian native, Dr. Gerling attended the University of California, Berkeley undergrad, UC San Diego medical school, Orthopedic residency at Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans, LA, and Spine Fellowship training with Henry Bohlman at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. He is a fellowship-trained, American Board Certified spine surgeon with advanced specialty training and extensive experience in complex cervical disorders, and minimally invasive techniques for treatment of spinal trauma, degenerative disorders or aging of the spine, and spinal deformity.

An active academic, Dr. Gerling is engaged in education and research. He has authored multiple clinical and basic science research papers, abstracts and textbook chapters, he frequently moderates research symposia, teaches courses for international spine societies and speaks at national and international conferences. He is an editorial reviewer for multiple journals, and he is a course instructor for the only spine surgical skills course offered at the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) meeting. As a member of multiple research societies, including the Cervical Spine Research Society (CSRS), Lumbar Spine Research Society (LSRS), North American Spine Society (NASS), and the Herndon Society, he is past President of the Brooklyn Orthopedic Society and a Fellow of the AAOS. Dr. Michael Jurkowich is one of our physicians and is a board-certified Physiatrist as well as fellowship-trained in Interventional Spine and Sports Medicine. He completed his fellowship training at Alabama Orthopedic Spine and Sports Medicine Associates.

Prior to this, he completed his residency training at the State University of New York, Downstate, serving as Chief Resident in his final year.

Dr. Jurkowich attended Ross University School of Medicine where he graduated with High Honors. He currently remains an active member in multiple medical organizations including the Spine Intervention Society, American Academy of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, American College of Sports Medicine, and the New York Society of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

Dr. Jurkowich specializes in non-surgical treatment of headaches, neck and back pain through the use of epidurals, facet joint injections, sacroiliac joint injections, radiofrequency ablation, vertebral augmentation, spinal cord stimulator trials, discography, and intra-discal steroid injections. Through his extensive training, Dr. Jurkowich is also certified to perform electrodiagnostic testing such as EMG/NCV which can prove vital in the diagnosis and targeted treatment of such conditions.

Alkies Lapas, DO

An honorary graduate of Rutgers University, Dr. Alkies Lapas received his doctorate of medicine from LECOM in Erie, PA, and completed a radiology residency at Cooper University Hospital in Camden, NJ. Following residency, he pursued a subspecialty fellowship in Neuroradiology at Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, CT, serving as Neuroradiology Division Chief Fellow as well as attending radiologist in the departments of Neuroradiology & Emergency Medicine at Yale-New Haven Hospital. He has since been
appointed Adjunct Clinical Instructor of Neuroradiology by Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine, participating in rotating medical student and radiology resident education and supervision in both private and clinical practice. In addition to being duly licensed to practice medicine in the State of New York, he holds active medical licenses in multiple other states and currently serves as Chairman of Radiology at Hudson Regional Hospital in Secaucus, NJ, where he is responsible for the clinical oversight of the Radiology Department, including quality assurance, protocol development, and direct management of the radiology staff. Gbolahan Okubadejo, MD, FAAOS

Board certified and fellowship trained, Dr. Gbolahan Okubadejo specializes in the treatment of degenerative spinal disease, spinal deformity, and cervical, lumbar, and thoracic conditions.

Dr. Okubadejo earned his undergraduate degree at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, and his medical degree at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore.

He completed his internship and orthopedic surgery residency at Barnes-Jewish Hospital at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. Dr. Okubadejo completed a spinal surgery fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pittsburgh.

Dr. Okubadejo is a published research author and has presented his findings at several major spinal conferences around the globe. While a surgical resident, he won the Leonard Marmor Surgical Arthritis Foundation Resident Award for the best research project.

Oleg Olshanetskiy, DO

Dr. Olshanetskiy, received his first graduate medical degree from Odessa State School of Medicine, Ukraine in 1991. He received his second graduate medical degree at New York College of Osteopathic Medicine, Old Westbury, N.Y. in 1998. He completed a 3 year Family Medicine residency at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital of the Mount Sinai Healthcare System, New York and Peninsula Hospital Medical Center of the Northwell LIJ Healthcare System, New York.

Stephen P. Toder, MD
Radiology

Dr. Toder was born in Brooklyn, New York. He went to Midwood High School, then to college at Oberlin College, Oberlin Ohio, majoring in Biology. Dr. Toder did his medical school training at NYU School of Medicine, and then post-graduate Internal Medicine Internship at Montefiore Hospital and Medical Center, finally Radiology Residency at NYU/Bellevue, with an extra year fellowship in Abdominal Radiology. He was board certified in Diagnostic Radiology in 1980.

Dr. Toder worked in the Radiology Department at Orange Memorial Hospital in Orange, New Jersey from 1981 until the hospital closed in January 2004. In recent years, he has worked at East Orange General Hospital and Hudson Regional Hospital and at various out-patient radiology and MRI centers.

Some of his interests include books, movies, and crossword puzzles.

Mohan Tripathi, MD
Neurosurgery

Dr. Tripathi is a fellowship-trained spine surgeon specializing in minimally invasive and complex spine surgery. After graduating cum laude from Rutgers University with a BA in Genetics, Dr. Tripathi earned his Doctorate in Medicine at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, PA. This was followed by a residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at Rutgers-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. His fellowship in Spine Surgery was completed at University of California – San Diego, one of the most comprehensive and sought-after spine surgery fellowships in the country.

Dr. Tripathi has authored numerous peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and presentations and remains active in research. Additionally, he is an active member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, North American Spine Society, and the International Society for the Advancement of Spine Surgery.

His practice encompasses a wide range of spinal conditions, including traumatic injuries and degenerative conditions of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine. His training allows him to cater treatment options specifically to the patient and their condition. His treatment philosophy is simple: “Surgery should be the last resort. I would not recommend any treatment to a patient that I would not accept for myself, my friends, or my family.”

In his spare time, he enjoys cooking, traveling, swimming, and water polo. He also is proficient in conversational Gujarati.
